3 steps to Zero Food Waste

Here are some hard facts statistics around Food Waste in Australia. 
  • The Government estimates food waste costs the Australian economy $20 billion each year. 
  • Over 5 million tonnes of food ends up as landfill, enough to fill 9,000 Olympic sized swimming pools.
  • 35% of the average household bin is food waste. 

So how can we reduced our food waste at home.

1. Reduce Food waste

  • Make an Eat me First container for the top shelf of your fridge. Put all the orphan fruit and vegetables that needs to be consumed first here. So you give them priority to eat them first before anything else in the fridge.
  • Chop up your produce and store it air tight contains or silicone food bags (stay fresh longer) It will organise you to have all the food handy for salads, smoothies, dinner preparations.

2. Low Food Waste

  • Freeze your leftovers. If you see your fruit and vegetables getting a bit sad, chop them up and pop them in the freezer for use later. 
  • Shop your pantry. Make a list of the ingredients in your pantry, stick it to your door or store it on your phone. Before you go shopping, check your list and look up new recipes that will use up what's in your pantry. Be organised. 

3. Zero Food Waste

  • Store everything in glass jars. You will see what you have. Label them so you know what is what. More more hidden packets rice or pasta. Use recycled glass jars. 
  • Use any left over vegetables you have into a stir fry, curry or make an omelet, or scramble eggs. Use left over fruit in your smoothies. 
  • Be a mindful consumer.  - Do some meal planning, only buy what you need,  Have a few recipes for leftovers.
